Half Day Fun !

I hope you are all enjoying your half day. Here is an update on all the good things happening in 2J. We continue with Retelling during reading. We have talked through the parts of a story, we have written inn our reading journal about retelling a story using our bookmarks and we have made a foldable of a retelling of a book that was read independently. In writing , we are working on research. We have read simple biographies and generated a list of questions that were left unanswered. The children will work with a partner on the iPad tomorrow to seek out those answers. More good things ahead...

Remember parent conferences will be held on November 12th. Vision and hearing will happen at school on October 31 and the Turkey Trot in PE will be on November 5th. More to come about our Halloween Party.

HOMEWORK !!!!!

This is week 2 with our homework. I have sent home laminated envelopes so that homework stays in one place. It will always go home on Monday and should be returned on Friday. The folder has a list of spelling homework suggestions printed on it. Disregard them~ I was being organized last year and laminated them in June. Plans change and we will do our spelling work in the classroom this year. I just couldn't waste the folders by throwing them away.
Please be sure that your child has a Take Home Folder.  Check the folder daily as that is where you will find completed and unfinished work or even a friendly note from me!
Last but definitely not least, Raz-Kids is up and running. Last week, I showed the kids how it works and they are excited about reading on line. You could use Raz Kids for your reading each night if you wish. A good ole' fashioned  book works just as well. I can see in my account who and when kids use Raz kids. I can also see for how long and which books they have read.
As a reminder, Wednesday is a half day. The students will be dismissed at 11:30 am.

A Busy Week

Last week, we spent time getting to know each other and the routines of the classroom. There was reading ,Math and word study.
This week, we spent time working in small groups. I look forward to working with individual students to assess their needs academically. We spent time sharing our learning in small groups . The groups offer a more in depth look at each child's thinking.

Check out the tab (page) at the top of the blog. marked schedule. This tab will give you all of the days of the week and when specials occur. Today, September 13, 2013 is Day 6 in our six day rotation.

Check out the Scholastic order in the children's take home folder.
Have a great weekend!

Another good day getting to know each other.

Getting to know you ~

As we get to know each other, our class becomes more and more of a community.
One way that we are sharing who we are is by creating our personal t-shirt(above). Each child answered questions in writing or a sketch  such as ,"What is your favorite food?" or "What do you like to do when you are at school or at home?". These were all answered on our t-shirts which now hang on our clothes line in the classroom. Each student shared important information about themselves. We then wrote in our journal and expanded our work with details while staying on topic. At Morning Meeting we played a game called "Just like me". It was easy to see that we shared many common ideas and yet we were still individuals.
We went to the Library today. Library will be every Tuesday. We also went to the Computer Lab. They just happened to be on the same day. Computer is every day four which is the six day rotation used by the Middle School.
Picture Day is next Monday.
Tomorrow we have Art as our special.

We have spent time looking at symbols in our everyday life. Ask your children about different symbols and what they represent.

Welcome

I am so excited to start a new school year !! I can't wait to meet all of my new students tomorrow. I have always loved the first day of school. There are so many new things to see and explore. Do you see that little girl in the picture? Do you think she looks excited? Well, that is me in Second Grade.  I remember Second grade very well. It was a year where I felt more and more confident of the things I learned. I want you, my new students, to feel more and more confident  about the things you are learning this year.
Tomorrow is a big day !
