Great Math Website

We have been working with subtraction. Here is a great website to use for review. Ask your kids to show you how to use it. Ha, Ha! Click on this link and choose Base Ten Blocks subtraction

NLVM grade 2

There are many other choices at this link. Let them explore. This work is at their grade level and they can play until they see how it works.

Here's another option. This is a free website that we have used in Computer Lab. They know how to sign in.
(Hint: firstname, firstname) This Moby Max. I am able to see how much time and progress they make in each category. I am also able to create assignments.Enjoy!

Welcome Back !!!!

Thanks to the lovely weather, we missed our little Valentine exchange. Not to worry!!
We will exchange cards tomorrow morning.(Monday) It would be fun to have a few snacks but we can also get by with what we have.
Yes we will also have our Snowtastic Poetry reading this Thursday. I will send the time when it is set up. I guess it is good that the snow has stuck around or we wouldn't have Snowtastic poetry.
I hope your vacation was wonderful. I'm looking forward to getting back to creating good things.
Best, Jen

Poetry in Winter

I thought as we wind up our poetry unit it would be interesting to watch a famous New England poet read one of his most famous poems.

Click on the link below to see the poet himself!

Ideas for Math

The children have just completed a District assessment in Math. I'm feeling that they need more practice with basic addition and subtraction facts. This is an annual Second grade teacher lament. I have found a cool website and have shared with the kids in school. It would be great to have them use it at home. here is the link  ict games
Also, good ole' fashioned  flash cards from the dollar store work just fine. Have them test you, set up a competition, offer rewards, all of these things will help them to enjoy their work.  The more fluent they are with basic facts, the more success and enjoyment they will have in Math. Basic facts are to math as words are to reading. Good luck

Save the date.

We will be having a Snowtastic Poetry Reading on February 14th. We have not decided on a time yet but we do know it will be in you student's homeroom and it will happen in the afternoon.

Welcome Back !

I'm hoping that everyone had a happy and restful vacation. I have heard so many stories today. We have written a few stories and shared many more. In  Math, we worked on adding tens. This was a review lesson but it did help to get our brains going. We are working with two digit numbers and it would be good for you to have your children identify the tens place for reinforcement. An example would look like this;  24+40 =_.
We are working with just adding tens. Adding ones will be reviewed tomorrow. Ask your kids what strategy they use to find the sum. The  two vocab words for today were mental math and tens digit. In reading, we reviewed choosing a just right book and wrote about it in our journals. We are working on a class poem about family traditions. Please jog their memories about your special traditions. Checkout the new homework
Soon to come~ more info about our Poetry Jam.
